Nevada Ranks Second Lowest in Per Person Health Care Spending

Americans spent an average of US $9,717 per person on health care in 2024, but the figure varies widely by state according to new Bureau of Economic Analysis data.

Alaska led the nation at $14,044 per person spending, followed by Washington, D.C. at $13,865 and South Dakota at $12,451.

At the other end of the spectrum, Utah recorded the lowest per person spending at $7,233. Nevada came in second lowest at $7,536, followed by South Carolina. The lowest spending states clustered across the Mountain West and South.

Nevada's relatively low per person health care expenditure of $7,536 places it well below the national average. Analysts say prices and geography, more than how often people receive care, drive these differences. Hospital and physician costs, provider wages, and local demographics are the primary factors.

This data comes as Nevada leaders continue to address health care access, workforce challenges, and cost containment issues across the state.
