Nevada Serves as Top Destination for California Companies
Major companies continue to leave California, and Nevada has become a notable destination for many of them. Las Vegas stands out as the top destination for these relocations. Approximately 2,900 firms moved from California to Las Vegas between 1990 and 2019. When including Reno and Henderson, Nevada attracted thousands of additional businesses from California during this period.
Nevada ranked third among states for California headquarters relocations from 2018 to 2021. The trend has continued, with strong corporate interest extending into 2026.
Businesses relocating from California point to several key advantages. These include Nevada’s lack of a state income tax, a more favorable regulatory environment, and close proximity to California markets. Many moves involve operations, incorporations, expansions, or reincorporations. Full Fortune 500 headquarters shifts are less common in Nevada. For those larger headquarters moves from California, Texas has been the biggest winner and has now overtaken California as the state with the most Fortune 500 company headquarters.
These relocations support broader business activity in Nevada. The state maintains a smaller overall corporate base than Texas, California, or New York. Nevada’s economy has long centered on gaming and hospitality, but incoming companies are helping diversify into sectors such as technology, logistics, and finance.
Las Vegas and Reno have seen notable population and business growth tied to migration from California. Reports show that roughly one-in-four new Las Vegas residents in recent years came from California. This growth brings new jobs, investment, and economic development across the state.
Nevada’s business climate plays a key role. Competitive tax policies and strategic location help the state attract and retain companies. State and local leaders continue to support this growth through economic development initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and targeted regulatory reforms.
