Nevada Math Proficiency Rates Lag National Averages

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, 39% of fourth graders, 28% of eighth graders, and 22% of 12th graders nationwide demonstrated proficiency or higher in math in 2024.

Nevada fourth graders posted a 36% proficiency rate. This figure stands below the national average but reflects improvement from 28% in 2022. Nevada eighth graders recorded a 20% proficiency rate, below the national average.

Massachusetts led with 51% of fourth graders proficient. Florida and Wyoming followed among the top three states. New Mexico posted the lowest rate at 23% for fourth graders, with other bottom states including those notably below national figures in both grades.

Massachusetts also led eighth-grade proficiency at 37%, with New Mexico at 14% among the bottom.

Nevada placed in the lower half of states for both fourth-grade and eighth-grade math proficiency. Fourth graders performed closer to the national average than eighth graders.

The data highlight ongoing challenges in math achievement, particularly as students progress through grades.
