Nevada Medicaid Adds Dental Benefits for ~375K Nevada Enrollees

Nevada Medicaid announced a major expansion of adult dental benefits effective July 1, providing more than 374,500 members with access to preventive and diagnostic dental care for the first time.

What is Medicaid? Medicaid is a joint federal and state government program that provides health insurance to low-income individuals and families.

The new dental benefits include teeth cleanings, exams, cavity repair, and other essential services. This marks a significant shift away from Nevada’s previous emergency-only coverage, which was among the most restrictive in the nation.

Expanding dental benefits is a major step forward for Nevada,” said State Dental Officer Dr. Keith Benson. “When people can get cleanings, exams, and early treatment, they’re able to avoid painful emergencies and the financial strain that comes with them. This expansion reflects a strong, collaborative effort across our state to make oral health more accessible.”

Dr. Benson credited Governor Joe Lombardo (R) for championing the funding proposal during the last legislative session. He also recognized key advocates including State Senator Dina Neal (D), Nevada Dental Association, UNLV School of Dental Medicine, and Roseman University for their advocacy.

To handle increased demand, Liberty Dental (Nevada Medicaid’s dental administrator) has expanded support offices throughout Nevada while offering district offices in Carson City, Reno, Las Vegas, and Elko to assist members.

This expansion is expected to reduce emergency room visits for dental pain, lower long-term healthcare costs, and improve quality of life for thousands of low-income Nevadans. It also highlights ongoing efforts to address healthcare disparities in both urban and rural communities.
