Nevada Politicians’ Sexual Misconduct Allegations Revisited Amid Swalwell’s Resignation
Recent allegations of sexual misconduct against Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell have drawn national attention, with multiple women, including a former staffer, accusing him of inappropriate behavior ranging from unwanted advances to more serious claims of assault. Swalwell has denied the allegations. These developments serve as a reminder of similar investigations and allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment involving Nevada’s elected officials.
Former Nevada Democratic Congressman Ruben Kihuen faced multiple accusations of making persistent and unwanted sexual advances toward women who worked with him during his 2016 campaign and in Congress. A House Ethics Committee investigation found he violated the House code of conduct through repeated unwanted advances of a sexual nature. Kihuen did not seek reelection in 2018.
At the state level, an independent investigation found that Democratic State Senator Mark Manendo violated the Nevada Legislature’s anti-harassment policy through multiple instances of inappropriate behavior toward female staffers and lobbyists. Manendo resigned in 2017.
In 2019, Democratic Assemblymember Mike Sprinkle resigned from the Nevada Assembly amid allegations of sexual harassment. In his resignation statement, he cited the growing claims against him and said he was taking full responsibility for his actions.
As Nevada continues to elect and monitor its representatives, these incidents underscore the importance of thorough vetting, transparent investigations, and strong ethical standards.
